Universal Design

Universal Design is a design methodology meant to make everything humans interact with more usable. On the web, Universal Design starts with accessibility, utilizing web standards and guidelines in order to make websites easier to use for people with disabilities. But Universal Design takes the concept of accessibility further, trying to reduce all limitations regardless of a user's disability or even more basic barriers like native language, reading level or just age.

Why Support Universal Design?

In our opinion, the question should be why not? Sites that follow Universal Design standards and guidelines benefit everyone through better content organization, navigation, and search engine optimization, just to name a few.

Breaking the Rules

The world of web accessibility and Universal Design is often confusing. Unlike the rigid ADA rules for construction, opinions abound and accepted practices for exactly what makes electronic information accessible are all too often open for interpretation. We follow basic rules of accessibility and apply Universal Design techniques to all of our sites, but we also break some rules from time to time. Ultimately, Universal Design is a very important part of our design and development process and is always a consideration for everything we build.
